Project F5

refresh

When it comes to helping Web developers adhere to open standards so that their sites will work properly in Opera, our storied (Storey-ed?) Open the Web team is always up to the challenge.

That said, there are other website issues we could use your help with. In particular, there are a lot of sites out there that have old, outdated, or simply incorrect information about Opera. For example, some sites still claim that Opera contains built-in advertising (unless users pay a license fee). That stopped being the case just over two years ago! There are other misconceptions as well, such as people confusing Opera Mini with Opera Mobile.

As an ongoing project, let's work together to correct websites that have incorrect information about Opera. Obviously, we don't have to fix every old news article talking about previous versions of Opera, but general information sites without a specific publication date should be corrected to reflect the latest info. In general, a polite letter to the relevant Webmaster should be sufficient.

When you've contacted a site, please post the URL here (so that others won't contact the same site over and over again) and describe what you asked them to fix. We'll send an Opera goodie-bag to the person who contacts the most sites in two weeks (deadline: Oct. 10th), and if you find/contact at least 5 sites with incorrect/outdated information about Opera, we'll enter you into a random drawing to win one other goodie-bag.

Good luck!

Coxy,

Thanks for the heads up! We're going to look into the problem with Opera and Wallop and see what the issue is.

I do this all the time, less because it's better for Opera users and more because it's a better way to encourage standards compliance and a universal browsing experience.

I'm surprised at large companies that refuse to make changes to accomodate Opera. Who would really say no to a 3-5% increase in customers? Fixing websites is easy and it doesn't really cost anything. NOT fixing them is a sign of fundamental misunderstanding or an IT/web department that's too stubborn for its own good.

Starting with Opera's help site. Last time I was looking for something, I found several out of date articles.
*goes and checks help.opera.com*
Ah, I see they've added a 'last updated for Opera x.x', at least. But seriously, a lot of the offical opera.com site is out of date. Take this page, for example: Why Opera?. Those features are old. A pop-up killer, integrated search? Please.

NFGman, I take it you're not a web developer. Fixing websites takes time, and in a business setting, that means money, whether it's billable hours, or just time that the developer could have been working on something else. I once spent several hours trying to figure out why a design worked perfectly in Opera, Firefox and Safari, but broke horribly in IE6... and broke horribly in a different way in IE7.

To make matters worse, a lot of the problem sites out there are built for IE6, with one set of hacks for Firefox and set layer of hacks for IE7. As far as they're concerned, supporting Opera and Safari means adding 2 more sets of hacks.

So you have to convince them that it's worth either adding more sets of hard-to-maintain hacks, or throwing it all out and redesigning the site from scratch with a standards-based approach. And to do that, you need to convince them that they really will get more business, and that it will be enough to offset the cost of the redesign.

Just ban IE. Let websites display a note that IE is broken, nonstandard and unsupported, users should get a better one.

Err... people, this project is about fixing information about opera here and there, not about fixing sites to be opera-compatible.

With my Windows 98SE system, I use Opera and Firefox exclusively to browse. If a site fails on both browsers, I leave a nastygram and abandon the site. If the site fails in Opera but works in Firefox, I generally leave a polite comment about the actual experience I had. I no longer consider IE a workable browser, and when I switch to Linux OS I will no longer have IE available, only Opera, Firefox, Konqueror, and other secure Internet tools. My dissatisfaction with Microsoft stems from their paranoid attempts to 'protect' a product that has become increasingly less pleasant, reliable, or intuitive to use; I detest the entire 'windows activation protocol' and the loss of true command line interface in Windows NT, XP, and that awful Vista version. As cross platform browsers, Opera and Firefox will remain my choices of web browser.

actually, Oromis, they've really been trying to make it easier to use. for once, microsoft isn't lying. you see, they haven't only been CLAIMING they've been trying, in fact they're claiming they're NOT trying. in other words, they failed to copy Mac OS X.

anyway, the biggest problem i know of about this topic is that half the people i know who've heard of Opera think you still have to pay for it.

The biggist problem with Opera is it confuses people with buttons that MOST users never use.

The buttons beside the Back and Foward are pointless for most users and it HUGELY confuses people. The dialog at the start is GREAT! But should not be deafult.

Opera first before it does this prject, is perfect the User Interface for n00bs. Thats why FF is taking off so well! Its simple and very like IE in interface.

Although in everyway Opera is supiourer, but it scares people off.

Btw hope you guys are getting prepared for the best ever Opera theme of all time!!! :D (Made by me). It uses the buttons from Virage, before i releise this to the public ill ask for permision from the author but this new interface should be a base set for the new opera, it looks AMAZING and its relitvely small in file size. So all good! :D (Email me/PM me for a screenshot of what ive made thus far)

I used a site the other day that contained a shopping cart, and they overlaid a notice that the site might not work properly in my browser, suggesting IE or FF. It worked fine for me in Opera 9.5a, and I wondered if I should let them know, so they could stop sniffing out Opera, but decided in the end not to bother. I suppose that even though it worked for me, I only made one transaction, so I hadn't given it a proper test.
