Gustav holdouts turn to guns, knives and God (Reuters)

"Katrina was here, but God won't let that happen again," said Iglesia.

"I haven't shot anybody yet, but if I have to, I will. You have a lot of real idiots in this city," she said.

"I'm a strong swimmer. I'm prepared to bust through the attic," he said.

God won't let that happen again... but if it happens, I have my guns anyway.

A tough beast

Whale survives harpoon attack 130 years ago to become "world's oldest mammal"

A giant bowhead whale caught off the coast of Alaska had a harpoon point embedded in its neck that showed it survived a similar hunt ? more than a century ago. Biologists claim the find helps prove the bowhead is the oldest living mammal on earth. They say the 13-centimetre arrow-shaped fragment dates back to around 1880, meaning the 50-ton whale had been coasting around the freezing arctic waters since Victorian times.
Because traditional whale hunters never took calves, experts estimate the bowhead was several years old when it was first shot and about 130 when it died last month."No other finding has been so precise," said John Bockstoce, a curator at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts.Calculating a bowhead whale's age can be difficult, and is usually gauged by amino acids in the eye lenses. It is rare to find one that has lived more than a century, but experts now believe the oldest were close to 200 years old.The weapon fragment lodged in a bone between the whale's neck and shoulder blade comes from a 19th century bomb lance.

MONTREAL “PASSES GO” TO CLAIM THE TOP SPOT ON GLOBAL MONOPOLY GAME BOARD!

The world’s most popular board game announces the 22 cities elected by fans worldwide to appear on new MONOPOLY Here & Now: The World Edition game board

"East Longmeadow, Mass. (August 20, 2008) – After a worldwide vote, Montréal will represent the most expensive property on the new MONOPOLY Here & Now: The World Edition game board. Latvia’s national capital, Riga, joins Montreal to round out the dark blue property group, the most prestigious property group in the popular game invented by Charles Darrow in 1935.

During a six-week period in early 2008, MONOPOLY fans from around the world voted for the global cities that they would like to see represented on the first-ever World edition game board. More than 5.6 million votes were cast for 70 world-class cities, which determined 20 of the 22 cities featured in the game. The 20 cities with the most write-in votes faced off in a bonus vote and the two with the most votes, Taipei and Gdynia, earned the brown property spaces on the game board."

YES!!!! I remember I voted a few times myself... :D

Good news :)

Ottawa opens Canada's first whale sanctuary in the North.

OTTAWA - After more than a quarter century of talks and delays, Canada's first sanctuary for bowhead whales has been created in the eastern Arctic waters frequented by the bus-sized mammals.

Environment Minister John Baird announced Friday the establishment of a whale habitat around the northeast coast of Baffin Island, along with the creation of two wildlife and bird sanctuaries.

More than 336,000 hectares of Isabella Bay will now be protected as the Niginganiq National Wildlife Area. Named for their enormous bow-shaped skulls, bowhead whales were hunted voraciously in the 17th and 18th centuries for their blubber, which was then the main source of lamp oil.By the early 20th century, the whales were near extinction.

The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada designated bowheads "endangered" in the early 1980s. That designation was later changed to "of special concern," the lowest under the Species At Risk Act.
As recently as three years ago some scientists estimated there were only 5,000 bowheads left in the eastern Arctic. But the federal Fisheries Department acknowledged that was a huge underestimate last December in a submission to the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board.

The department now says there are likely more than 14,000 whales in eastern Arctic waters - suggesting bowheads are again as abundant as they were during the days of the commercial hunt.

So... there's as much whales as before. What we'll do with them now? Nothing! Just let them be!

As part of their signing of a 1993 land-claims deal to create Nunavut, the Inuit demanded the right to resume traditional bowhead hunting. The Fisheries Department now issues a small number of hunting permits each year for bowheads. Two weeks ago, a team of 20 hunters from Kangigsujuaq killed a male bowhead with shotguns and traditional weapons. It took half an hour for the whale to die, and another seven hours to tow the carcass 20 kilometres to a beach near the village.

Traditional shotguns???.... right.

The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC)

, ,

I always liked the concept of BOINC. Do you know what it is?
"The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is a non-commercial middleware system for volunteer and grid computing. It was originally developed to support the SETI@home project before it became useful as a platform for other distributed applications in areas as diverse as mathematics, medicine, molecular biology, climatology, and astrophysics. The intent of BOINC is to make it possible for researchers to tap into the enormous processing power of personal computers around the world."

It started with SETI@home but now you have so many projects to choose from... Some very useful! I decided to help with "Climate Prediction" but there so many specially in the medicine field. Rosetta@home, Einstein@Home, RieselSieve Project, etc. It runs in background and to me, it doesn't slow down my PC at all.. I have the feeling to participate to some important research! :D

I know one thing....
